Graduate Development Economics (ECON 524): 2026 -
This course uses applied microeconomics tools to study some of the main topics and questions in development economics. We start by studying the long-run determinants of development, including the role of institutions, history, and geography. We then study the measurement of poverty and inequality and how development policies can be evaluated. We will also think about issues related to health and nutrition, markets and mobility, firms, and family and gender economics. We then study the role of political economy and governments in shaping development outcomes. The course will end with economic growth and applications of these topics to modern-day development policy problems.
